It is our mission to help our students become successful and to assist them in reaching their potential. Building relationships with our students and families and maintaining sound two-way communication between the home and school are vital to this endeavor. It is also essential that our parents have easy access to all information that the school offers, so they can make informed educational decisions with their children.
At Kalamazoo Central, we allow our footprints to resonate with excellence.
MVP Mission:
Nurture the dreams of all students and empower all students to contribute to a better world. Vision: Inspiring Giants to be lifelong learners who create their own success.
Principles:
1. We believe in building meaningful relationships.
2. We speak life-giving words.
3. We focus on maintaining a culture of achievement & positivity
4. We inspire each other to navigate our own journey
5. We embrace & celebrate our diversity.
Kalamazoo Central High School is one of four high schools serving Kalamazoo Public Schools students. It is a Class A school, which serves students in ninth through 12th grade. Graduates of Kalamazoo Central, who meet all residency requirements, are eligible for The Kalamazoo Promise, a scholarship program that pays tuition and fees at public and private colleges and universities throughout Michigan.
Kalamazoo Central was the first public high school in Michigan. It opened in 1858, and graduated it's first class of eight students in 1859. Originally located in downtown Kalamazoo, in what is now the KPS Community Education Center and home to historic Chenery Auditorium, it moved to its current location in 1972. One of the highlights of Kalamazoo Central's history came in 2010, when President Barack Obama delivered the 2010 commencement address — the prize for the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge that was issued by the White House.
